Fitness Squad

Coaches: Gary Culpan

Parent Rep: Alison McCusker

Early in 2007 the M&B Committee renewed its commitment to providing fitness support for our Swimmers who no longer wish to train at a competitive level.  We were fortunate to receive the support of East Dunbartonshire Council for this initiative.  We re-launched our Fitness Squad with improved access to pool time and ensured that all our Swimmers and Parents understood the ethos of the Squad.

Whilst the Club always hopes that Fitness Squad swimmers may change their minds and request to work their way back into training for competitive swimming, this is not solely what Fitness Squad is about.  It is also about M&B identifying and helping to meet the needs of its former competitive swimmers. In particular, the Club is recognising that youngsters from Senior and Intermediate Squads, who have committed themselves to intensive swim training for a number of years, can only maintain the hard earned health and fitness benefits by continuing to follow a motivating, structured training programme.

Within the two lanes available to us for our new evening training sessions, the Club endeavours to achieve a mix of Swimmers who can work together at a good Intermediate Level or above.  With strict lane discipline up to eight swimmers per lane can be accommodated. Our Senior Coach approves Training Sets and individual swimmers discuss their overall fitness goals with our Fitness Squad Coach.  It should be noted that participation in Fitness Squad alone is probably not enough to maintain sufficient stamina to keep up with training at this level. It is unlikely that a Swimmer participating on a minimalist basis, without a significant commitment to training for another sport(s), could maintain a place in the Squad.

SQUAD ENTRY CRITERIA

   1. Must be able to train at a good Intermediate Level or above.
   2. Must be Age 13+ at full acceptance into the Squad.
   3. Must have had an active commitment to M&B for at least two years.

For Fitness Squad, as with other Squads, decisions on Squad moves, Trial Periods etc will be at the discretion of the receiving Coach, in consultation with our Senior Coach. At the Coaches’ discretion, Swimmers who do not initially meet all of these criteria, may, subject to competition for places, be offered a Trial Period.
