Spain 2011/12

9 Milngavie & Bearsden swimmers left the wind and rain behind over the recent festive period, travelling to Toremolinos for warm weather long course training. The group joined swimmers from F.I.R.S.T (Falkirk) and Dumfries for 8 days of intensive training encompassing 13 pool and 3 land sessions.

The Spanish sunshine and training facilities provided the perfect setting to step up preparations for the year ahead. Not only did it offer much needed long course exposure, but it also gave the swimmers the chance to test themselves against some of their closest competitors.

It wasn't quite all work and no play however, with new year celebrations on the beach and a midnight rendition of auld lang syne! Returning tired but enthused, the swimmers look forward to their first test of 2012 at the west district grand prix this weekend at East Kilbride.

Not pictured, but also out in Toremolinos with the Scottish National Youth squad, was Kirstin McKinley.

Thank you from Pam

Sorry it has taken so long to write to thank everyone so much for their very kind and generous gift. I was really overwhelmed with the generosity from everyone. I am not sure just now what we will buy with the gift but it will be put to very good use.
Thankyou again so much and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Scottish Nationals Short Course Championships Inverness 15th-18th December

Milngavie & Bearsden swimmers rounded off a remarkable 2011 with a glittering performance at the Scottish National Short Course Championships in Inverness. Against a backdrop of snow and christmas lights, they added their own festive sparkle with 5 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals on their way to breaking 13 district records. Double individual gold medallist Lauren Averell took the 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle titles, and also helped the girls 4x100 freestyle (Lauren Averell, Kirstin McKinley, Holly Shearer, Paige Lang) and 4x50 medley (Julie Williams, Kirstin McKinley, Lauren Averell, Megan Donnelly) relays to victory. Kirstin McKinley made it three individual national champions for the club, taking gold in the 200m freestyle. The Commonwealth Youth Games team member also won a silver (100m freestyle) and 2 bronze medals (100m breaststroke, 50m freestyle).

Calum Tait came away with silver in the 200 breaststroke, only edged out of the top spot by Warrender's world junior 100m breaststroke champion Craig Benson. Jack Thorpe also made it a clean sweep of district records over the sprint freestyle events, taking bronze in the 50. A number of other outstanding individual and team performances (girls 4x50 freestyle - Lauren Averell, Kirstin McKinley, Holly Shearer, Paige Lang - bronze) made it the most successful showing for the club at a national championships in many years.

Coach Craig Houston commented on the performance - 'I'm immensely proud of the way the whole team performed. Beyond the exceptional achievements of the individual medallists, our relay teams demonstrated our formidable depth and quality for a club of our size. As still a relatively young team to be competing at senior national level, we showed that we're more than a match for some of the top swimmers and clubs in the country, outperforming bigger, better resourced local rivals City of Glasgow amongst others. The group of swimmers continues cope well with the transition from junior swimming and now look forward to testing themselves in the new year at national and international level'.

A huge thank you to Craig Houston, Vickie Lang & Kelly Averell who travelled with the team and looked after everyone the whole weekend.

Mitchell Trophy 12th & 13th November

A team of 17 M&B swimmers made a splash at the Mitchell Trophy in Inverness at the weekend with an impressive haul of medals and personal best swims. A total of 71 personal best times brought with them 19 finals, 10 medals, 13 club records and 1 meet record.
With 6 of the 10 medals between them, senior squad swimmers Calum Tait and Kirstin McKinley contributed more than their fair share to the team cause. Gold medals in the 100 and 200 fc for Kirstin (the latter in a meet record) and 200br for Calum were just reward for fantastic individual performances. Jack Thorpe, Ewan Govan and Greg Watson also joined them on the podium during the meet, taking bronze medals for their efforts over the 50, 100, 1500 free and 100br.
Amongst the younger swimmers present, Georgia Lynch and Greg Watson showed their potential by posting several top eight finishes over an impressive range of events.
A huge thank you to Craig & Kelly who travelled with the team. Kelly sorted out the food the whole weekend and did a great job of looking after the team away from the pool. Also thanks to Stephen Miller who gave up so much of his weekend to drive the minibus and food shopping.

Drumchapel Pool

We would ask parents to remind swimmers they must shower before entering the pool. Swimmers must also ensure they lock their belongings in a locker at Drumchapel pool. The lockers take 20p.

Tadpoles Abercorn Pool

It has come to our notice that a number of parents and children wait in the hall area at Abercorn pool on a Monday evening.  Unfortunately, this area does not constitute part of our let at the school - we merely hire the pool and changing rooms.  Up until now the school has been good enough to allow parents and children to wait in this area during tadpole training.  However, this arrangement will be terminated permanently if children who are not swimming continue to run around.  We all realise that children love to run around but in this case there is a health & safety implication if the children were to injure themselves. If you do have to wait at Abercorn with children please ensure they are amused quietly, thank you.

Collection of Swimmers After Training

Please ensure you are on time to collect your swimmer/s after training.  Once the session has finished the coaches and lifeguards are free to leave.  It is the responsibility of the parents to ensure their child is not left alone after training - this is especially important at the school pools where the younger squads are training.
