The first step in a tooth implant procedure is to meet with one of our dentists for a full evaluation. Once we decide to move forward with the procedure, you will schedule your surgery. We offer a variety of anesthesia options to ensure your comfort during this procedure. We also offer sedation dentistry to allow you to relax throughout the entire process. If you opt for sedation, please arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home afterward.
During the surgical process, we will first give you anesthesia to numb the area where the implant will be placed. Then, we will create an incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone. We will use a series of tools to gradually widen the opening for the implant screw.
Before the implant fixture is placed, the surgeon may need to place a healing cap on the gum tissue, which protects the implant while it heals. In some cases, the abutment can be added at the same time as the implant. This requires less surgery, but it is important to know whether your abutment will be visible when you smile.
Once the abutment is in place, the surgeon will suture the implant site. Then, the healing process will begin. During this time, the bone will adapt to the implant and will grow around it in a process known as osseointegration. This process may take up to nine months to fully heal.
Once your implant has healed, you will return to the office for the final part of the procedure, placing the crown on your new tooth. This will require one or more follow-up visits, during which your dentist will remove the sutures and check for any signs of infection or complications.
