What is an Infertility Procedure?
An infertility procedure is a treatment to help you become pregnant. It can be used for men and women, as well as couples, singles, and same-sex people. The treatments may be covered by your health care plan, depending on where you live and what your coverage is like. Some of these procedures are more invasive than others. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is an infertility treatment that uses your own sperm to fertilize an egg in your uterus. It is the oldest and simplest of all fertility treatments. It can be useful for people who have low sperm counts or poor sperm motility. It is also a good first step for people with unexplained infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or other conditions that can affect fertility.
During this treatment, you take medicines by shots or injections in your lower belly to boost the production of eggs. Your doctor will monitor your ovaries with transvaginal ultrasounds and blood tests. If your eggs are not mature, doctors can inject sperm directly into the egg in a lab. This technique is called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). It can increase the chances of fertilized eggs becoming healthy embryos. Once an egg is fertilized, the doctor can transfer it to your uterus through a long thin tube (catheter) inserted into your vagina during a minor surgical procedure.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a more advanced fertility treatment. It involves mixing your own eggs with sperm in a lab to create an embryo. This can be done using your partner’s sperm or donated sperm. If you have low egg quality or are over age 40, IVF can be a better choice. It can also be helpful if you have a condition that prevents your sperm from fertilizing an egg, such as a blocked fallopian tube.
During IVF, doctors try to fertilize all the mature eggs they retrieve. About 70% of the eggs will fertilize. If an egg is healthy, the doctor can transfer it to your womb 3 to 5 days after it’s fertilized. Some couples choose to have PGD, which tests an embryo for genetic disorders before transferring it to the uterus.
Other fertility treatments are available, including using donor sperm or eggs. Donor sperm or eggs are used by couples who have a lower number of healthy eggs or have serious chromosomal defects that would make it difficult to get pregnant with their own eggs. They are also used by people who have cancer that might affect their fertility and by sexually and gender-diverse or single people who want a biological child. Your doctor will discuss these options with you. They will also offer counselling to help you and your partner cope with the emotional and relationship challenges that can be part of this treatment.
